Do Australian Citizens Need a Passport to Go to New Zealand?

For Australian citizens, if they want to travel to New Zealand, do they need a passport? The answer to this question is yes. They do need a passport to visit in Newzealand. To be more detailed, there are three situations. First, if you are an Australian citizen, you do not need a visa or permit to visit New Zealand when traveling on an Australian passport. Second, if you are an Australian resident with a current Australian permanent residence visa or a current Australian resident return visa, you don’t need a visitor visa either. Third, if your Australian residence visa is provisional or temporary, then you need to obtain a visitor visa.

Do Australian Residents Need Extra Documents to Travel to New Zealand?

Even though the Australian residents (non-citizens) don’t need a visa to New Zealand, does it mean they don’t need any documents? Actually, the answer is no. For permanent residents of Australia, they are required to obtain an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority), which is mandatory. If you have an NZeTA, you don’t need to apply for a visa. This applies to individuals who travel on a passport from a visa waiver country, cruise ship passengers, or permanent residents of Australia. With a NZeTA, you can stay in New Zealand for up to 3 months (or 6 months for British citizens). However, if you meet the following situations, you do not need an NZeTA.

  1. You are a New Zealand citizen travelling on a New Zealand passport, or a foreign passport that has a New Zealand citizen endorsement
