What Is The Singaporean ID Card?

Singaporean ID card is also called National Registration Identity Card (NRIC), which is the compulsory identity document issued to citizens and permanent residents of Singapore. In order to become a citizen or permanent resident, people must apply for a Singapore identity card within one year when they are 15 years old. The front face of the ID card covers identity card No., your non-color photograph, name, race, date of birth, sex and country. And the barcode of the NRIC number, your right thumbprint, nationality (for PRs only), date of issue and address are presented on the back of the card.

The General Requirements for Singaporean ID Card Photo

As we mentioned above, your Singapore ID card must contain your photo. Therefore, when you apply for the ID card, you must submit a photo to show your appearance for identity and face recognition. If the picture you hand in does not comply with the official rules, you will be rejected. To avoid wasting your time and money, you have better prepare a standard photo ahead of the application. Check the items below and see whether your photo is compliant.

  • Time. Taken within 3 months.
  • Content. Only yourself with your full face and shoulders visible.
  • Background. The background should be plain white without any shadows or objects.
  • Quality. The photo should be clear and in sharp focus.
  • Lighting. Appropriate lighting without any shadows or glares.

Errors in Snapping Singaporean ID Card Photographs

To help you clearly know about the standards of Singaporean ID Card images, we show some common errors below that you can refer to and avoid.

  • Your picture is blurred, distorted, overexposed, underexposed or pixelated.
  • Use computer software or mobile phone apps to alter the original photo.
  • Your features are blocked by hair, mask, etc.
  • Look at the other side or lower your head.
  • Your eyes are covered by dark glasses or head coverings.
  • Wear colored contact lens or have red eyes in the photo.
  • Shoulders and hair are not fully seen in the picture.
  • Have artificial expressions and show your teeth.

What Posture Should I Have When Taking Singaporean ID Card Pictures?

The Singaporean ID Card image will accompany you for many years, so you can make yourself look better in the photo. Posture is one of the key parts of taking photos. Here we will share some tips about striking a pose with you. Just follow us and remember to practice more before shooting.

  • Your ID Card photo needs to show you directly looking at the camera with a neutral expression, but it doesn't mean that you have to present a grim or glazed expression. Instead, you should relax your facial muscles and make your eyes bright and focused.
  • You should sit up or stand straight and roll your shoulders back to elongate the look of your neck.
  • Don't lift your chin upwards, because it will make you look like you have a double chin in the photograph. To avoid this, you should thrust your chin forward an inch or so and tuck your chin in slightly.
  • Straighten your back and keep confident during the whole process.

Can I Shoot My Singaporean ID Card Photos at Home?

Do you think taking pictures in photo booths or photo studios is inconvenient and expensive? If you do, there is a way to save your energy and money! Why not try taking photographs at home? You definitely can snap your identity card photos at home! Here are some tips for you.

  • Prepare a smartphone or a digital camera. A tripod will be great to fix the camera.
  • Select a room with sufficient daylight. If not, artificial lighting is okay.
  • Stand one meter away from the white wall and 1.5-3 meters away from the camera.
  • Adjust the position to find the best combination of lighting and angle.
  • Pose as what is mentioned above and relax.
  • Take more photos and choose the best one from them.
